Aluminum 7075-T6 alloy which is used in this research work is widely used in industry and in particular in aircraft structure [1]. When metal carbonyl (M-CO) is reacted with H2, it forms MC [2,3]. Some important mechanical hardening processes for gears include shot peening (utilizing metallic or ceramic spheres of various sizes), shotless water jet peening (using a jet of water with cavitation at high velocity and pressure), ultrasonic peening (using ultrasonically vibrated shot to impart compressive residual stresses), and laser peening (impacting the surface with impulses from a laser). The temperature uniformity in a modern low pressure carburising furnace is typically in the range of ± 5 K, which is much better than the standard ± 14 K (AMS2759/7A) or ± 15 K (DIN17022). In these processes the layer (film) of deposited material is thin and usually ranges from 0.1 µm to 1 mm.
Like a traditional “endo” gas generator, a nickel catalyst is used to “crack” natural gas (or another suitable hydrocarbon such as propane) in the presence of air. Rapid austenitizing is followed by emulsion quenching, which results in hard surfaces and reasonably tough cores, although the process has to be done properly to avoid quench cracks. Use of highly alloyed steel raises the effective case depth and prevents delayed failure. The resultant gas is cooled and dehydrated to become a mixed gas (endothermic gas), with a typical ratio of CO: H2: N = 23:31:46.
Figure 4 illustrates there is no significant difference in carbon weight percentage at varying depths on comparable samples. In this process, steel alloys are put in an oxygen-free, low-pressure environment. The entire surface of the part can be carburized by this process, but some areas may not need carburizing, and these can be coated to prevent carburizing taking place. Since the air flow remains constant, this creates a “lean” gas. The metallurgy team at Oerlikon Fairfield decided to investigate a new process technology being offered by Heavy Carbon Co., LLC (Pittsford, Michigan) known as the Endocarb system, which claims to dramatically reduce cycle time without sacrificing product quality.
Mo prealloyed steels are particularly well suited here, and more recently Cr and Cr–Mo prealloyed steels have also been used.30 In general, chemically homogeneous prealloyed steel grades are better suited to thermochemical treatments than heterogeneous ones prepared from mixed or diffusion bonded powders.
Producing the gas for carburizing is typically conducted in stages. Therefore, the elongated MnS inclusions on the surface of the plunger-sleeve would react more preferentially with the oxygen in the carburizing atmosphere of excessive oxygen when an unsuitable gaseous media was operated.

For testing purposes, the austenitizing and carburizing temperatures were held constant for both trials. Another advantage is the capability to carburize parts with complex geometry. While a conventional carburization furnace maintains a constant carbon potential during the “boost” and “diffuse” phases, the Endocarb system allows for the use of “carbon cycling” (i.e., the process starts at a much higher potential, then is rapidly lowered well below the initial setpoint). Industrial Steel Treating offers controlled atmosphere gas carburizing services. Si, Mn, and Cr should oxidize in gas-carburizing atmosphere, while Fe, Ni, and Mo are not expected to oxidize. The gas dissociates catalytically at the hot steel surface to generate elemental carbon atoms. The application of gears involve dynamic forces, occasional impacts, and constant friction. Ternary carbides (Ln2Mn17C3−x) are synthesized by reaction of the elemental components in a high-frequency furnace and arc-melting technique.
Process Details. The carbon potential at 925ºC can reach almost 1.5 percent before the Endocarb system determines that the gas is “over saturated.” Once this determination is made, the amount of endo gas being supplied by the generator is greatly reduced, and the carbon potential lowers to about 0.8 percent. Generally, sinter hardening is more economical than separate heat treatment and also results in cleaner parts without oil; the penalty is the higher alloy element content necessary. The portion without the shaft is copper-plated to prevent carbon penetration during carburizing. The Endocarb system creates atmosphere through the use of a constant flow of air and adjusting the flow of hydrocarbon gas.

This also usually leads to the introduction of compressive residual stresses that is beneficial for fatigue life. 11.20. To meet both customer product performance requirements and service life expectations, the surface of these parts needs to be manufactured with a high surface hardness and a soft, ductile core to avoid brittle fracture.
